Erosion and Relocation Coalition talks
to us about the people of Shishmaref, Alaska, and their decision to move
their village and their culture to higher and safer ground. This
is perhaps the first case in which an American town is being
forced to relocate due directly to global warming. The
village of Shishmaref, an island that has supported people for
thousands of years, cannot do so much longer. Shismaref's people
are making plans to head to higher ground, as the rising waters
and changes to the winter ice shelf have led to the erosion of
hundreds of feet of land. Time is running out.
